You open your laptop, settle into your chair, and start answering the first email of the day. Then one paw lands on the keyboard. Another follows. Thirty seconds later, your cat is sitting directly on the one object you need most, looking completely satisfied with the arrangement.
It can feel suspiciously personal. But your cat probably is not trying to sabotage your deadline. A laptop can bring together several things cats may value at once: warmth, your scent, easy access to your attention, and a familiar routine that predicts you are about to sit still for a while.
Why Is Your Cat So Interested in Your Laptop?
The interesting part is that your cat may not be especially interested in the computer itself.
Look at the situation from their side of the desk. The laptop is warm. Your hands have been all over it. Your eyes are fixed on it. And once you open it, you may remain in roughly the same place for the next hour.
For a cat who enjoys warmth, familiarity, or being near you, that is a fairly attractive piece of furniture.
1. The Laptop May Be a Warm Place to Settle

One day you may notice the funniest part: you have barely touched the power button, and your coworker has already arrived.
Does Sitting on Your Laptop Mean Your Cat Loves You?
It can be part of social closeness, but laptop sitting is not a reliable feline love test.

Is It Safe for a Cat to Sit on a Laptop?
A cat briefly stepping or resting on a normally operating laptop is not usually a reason to panic, but it is still sensible to manage the situation.

Placement matters.
A beautiful cat bed across the room may lose badly to a mediocre keyboard that is six inches from your hands.
If closeness is the reward, put the alternative close.
If warmth seems important, a cozy or self-warming resting surface may make the spot more appealing. Your cat should always be able to move away freely if they become too warm.
Reward the Alternative Before the Laptop Hijacking Begins
When your cat voluntarily settles in the nearby bed or perch, quietly make that choice worthwhile with something they enjoy—perhaps attention, praise, play, or an appropriate treat.
The timing is important.
If you wait until your cat sits on the keyboard and then repeatedly offer a treat to get them off, you can accidentally create another useful routine:

Instead, reward the nearby resting spot when your cat chooses it.
Create Predictable Attention Around Work Time
If your cat tends to demand interaction the moment work begins, consider giving them a little positive attention or interactive play before you settle into a long computer session.

Redirect Calmly Instead of Punishing
Avoid yelling, startling, spraying, or turning the desk into an unpleasant place whenever your cat approaches.
Instead, calmly guide or lure them to the approved spot and reward them there.
Your goal is not to teach, “Being near me while I work is bad.”
It is to teach, “This is where good things happen while I work.”
What If Your Cat Suddenly Starts Sitting on Your Laptop?
A new interest in your laptop does not automatically mean something is wrong.
Start with the obvious questions. Has the weather become cooler? Did you move your desk? Have you been spending more hours working from home? Did your cat lose access to a favorite window perch or resting place?
A small environmental change can be enough to create a new favorite spot.
However, pay more attention if the laptop behavior appears alongside broader changes such as unusually persistent vocalization, restlessness, major changes in social behavior, appetite changes, altered litter-box habits, apparent pain, or other signs that your cat is not behaving like themselves.
