How Often Should You Change Aquarium Water?

You walk past the aquarium and everything looks fine.

The water is clear. The fish are swimming normally. The filter is humming away. So when water-change day appears on the calendar, it is easy to wonder: Do I really need to change water that already looks clean?

Usually, yes—but there is no single schedule that fits every aquarium.

Quick answer: Most established aquariums benefit from regular partial water changes, often on a weekly or every-other-week rhythm. The right schedule for your tank depends on water-test results, stocking level, feeding, filtration, plants, and the species you keep. A calendar gives you a starting point; your water chemistry tells you whether that schedule is actually working.

Why Aquarium Water Needs Changing Even When It Looks Clear

An aquarium filter does several important jobs, but it does not make old water endlessly reusable.

Fish release waste. Uneaten food and plant material break down. In a cycled aquarium, beneficial bacteria convert toxic ammonia to nitrite and then to less-toxic nitrate. Nitrate can be used by plants or removed through other processes, but in many home aquariums it gradually accumulates and is diluted through water changes.

There is another reason the glass can fool you: clear water is not the same as chemically healthy water.

Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, changes in pH, and declining alkalinity are not things you can reliably judge by looking across the room.

So, How Often Should You Change Aquarium Water?

There is a reason experienced fish keepers can give different answers to this question and still maintain healthy tanks.

Even reputable care guidance varies.

Merck's routine aquarium maintenance table lists water changes every two weeks, with the amount adjusted for stocking level. The RSPCA recommends regular weekly partial water changes, while a 2026 PetMD fish-tank maintenance guide gives 10% weekly or 25% every other week as basic starting points for many established aquariums.

That range tells us something useful: there is no magic day or percentage that overrides what is actually happening inside your tank.

For a typical established community aquarium, choose a consistent weekly or biweekly partial-water-change routine as your starting point. Then test the water and adjust from there.

Let the Tank Tell You Whether Your Schedule Is Working

One is lightly stocked, mature, and full of thriving live plants. The other contains several large, enthusiastic eaters that seem capable of producing waste faster than you can locate the siphon.

Giving both tanks exactly the same maintenance schedule simply because they hold the same number of gallons would miss the point.

Build a Water-Change Schedule From Your Own Tank

If you are tired of wondering whether you should follow “every Saturday” or “every other Sunday,” try something more useful: collect a short history from your aquarium.

For the next few maintenance cycles:

  1. Test before the water change. Record nitrate and pH, and check ammonia and nitrite whenever the aquarium is new, unstable, recently changed, or giving you reason for concern.
  2. Perform your normal partial water change. Keep the percentage and interval consistent at first.
  3. Test again during the next cycle. Look at how quickly the readings change rather than judging one isolated number.
  4. Notice what changed in the tank. New fish, heavier feeding, growing juveniles, dying plant leaves, or reduced filter flow can all alter the waste load.
  5. Adjust gradually. Shorten or lengthen the interval based on a pattern, not one unusually messy afternoon.

When Should You Change Aquarium Water More Often?

Your normal schedule may need tightening when the aquarium is producing waste faster than usual.

That can happen when:

  • The tank is heavily stocked
  • You keep large or particularly messy fish
  • Feeding has increased
  • Uneaten food or organic debris is accumulating
  • You recently added livestock
  • Filter flow has dropped or filtration has been disrupted
  • Water tests are drifting out of the target range for your species

Smaller aquariums can also change chemistry faster when something goes wrong simply because there is less water to dilute waste, although tank volume alone does not determine the schedule.

What If Ammonia or Nitrite Shows Up?

Once an established aquarium shows measurable ammonia or nitrite, you are no longer deciding whether Tuesday or Saturday is the better maintenance day.

You are troubleshooting a water-quality problem.

Merck recommends water changes as part of correcting elevated ammonia or nitrite while also addressing the underlying biological-filtration problem. The exact response depends on the severity and on other parameters such as pH and source-water chemistry.

Important: Do not ignore ammonia or nitrite because your regular water-change day is still several days away. Test the water, protect the fish with appropriate corrective action, and identify why the biological filtration is not keeping up.

How Much Water Should You Change at One Time?

Routine maintenance generally means a partial water change, not draining the aquarium and starting again.

The percentage depends on how much waste accumulates and how closely the replacement water matches the aquarium. Many established home tanks are maintained successfully with modest partial changes, while tanks with a heavier bioload may need more.

What matters is the result.

If a small change barely lowers rapidly accumulating nitrate, the schedule or percentage may need adjusting. If your parameters remain consistently stable, there is little reason to chase a larger percentage just because someone else's aquarium uses one.

Very large corrective water changes are sometimes appropriate during genuine water-quality problems, but they deserve more care than a routine change because sudden differences in temperature, pH, hardness, or salinity can stress fish.

Do Water Changes Remove the Beneficial Bacteria?

This is one of the fears that keeps some new aquarium owners from changing enough water.

Fortunately, the bacteria responsible for biological filtration primarily colonize surfaces with suitable flow and oxygen—especially biological filter media and other surfaces within the system. Merck describes biofilters as providing the large surface area these nitrifying bacteria need.

Removing a portion of aquarium water therefore does not mean removing your biological filter.

The bigger risk is damaging the filter media itself—for example, by aggressively cleaning established media in untreated chlorinated tap water.

If reusable filter media needs rinsing, gently cleaning it in water removed from the aquarium during maintenance is a common way to clear debris while reducing unnecessary exposure to chlorine or chloramine.

Topping Off Evaporated Water Is Not a Water Change

This one catches people because the water line rises again and the aquarium looks “full.”

But evaporation removes water; it does not carry away the nitrate, dissolved waste, and many minerals left behind in the tank.

Adding replacement water after evaporation is useful for restoring the water level, but it does not replace routine water exchange.

Merck specifically describes long-term topping-off without adequate water changes as one pattern associated with old-tank water-quality problems.

In saltwater aquariums, remember that salt does not evaporate with the water, so routine evaporation top-offs are normally made with appropriately prepared fresh water rather than additional saltwater.

A Simple, Safe Routine for Water-Change Day

You do not need to turn every water change into a full aquarium renovation.

  1. Check the water first. Testing before the change gives you information about whether your current schedule is working.
  2. Prepare replacement water. Municipal tap water commonly contains chlorine or chloramine, so use an appropriate conditioner according to its directions when needed.
  3. Match conditions as closely as practical. Avoid large sudden temperature changes; marine tanks also require appropriate salinity matching.
  4. Siphon out the planned amount. Remove visible debris from accessible substrate areas without tearing apart the entire habitat every time.
  5. Refill gently. Add prepared water without blasting fish, plants, or substrate with a strong stream, then confirm equipment is operating normally.

The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that municipal water may contain chlorine or chloramine, both of which can harm fish and the bacteria needed for biological filtration, so untreated tap water should not simply be poured into the aquarium.

Should Fish Be Removed During a Routine Water Change?

Usually, no.

For normal partial maintenance, leaving fish in the aquarium avoids the extra stress and injury risk that can come from chasing, netting, transferring, and returning them.

Lower the water level only as much as your planned change requires and make sure heaters or other equipment that must remain submerged are handled according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Then work calmly around the fish.

Most will eventually learn the routine remarkably well. Some disappear behind the plants. Others investigate the siphon as though you scheduled maintenance specifically for their entertainment.

What About Freshwater vs. Saltwater Aquariums?

The core principle is the same: replace part of the old water with properly prepared water often enough to keep conditions stable and waste under control.

Saltwater and reef aquariums, however, add variables such as salinity and the chemistry needs of corals and other invertebrates. The percentage and replacement-water preparation should therefore match the specific system rather than being copied from a generic freshwater schedule.

The same is true within freshwater aquariums. A lightly stocked planted community tank and a heavily stocked tank of large fish should not be expected to behave identically.

Consistency Matters More Than Finding a Perfect Number

There is a nice moment that comes after you have kept the same aquarium for a while.

You stop seeing water changes as an arbitrary chore imposed by a calendar. You begin recognizing the rhythm of your own tank.

You know roughly how the nitrate trends. You notice when the filter is collecting waste faster than usual. You know whether adding a few fish changed the maintenance load. The siphon comes out because the aquarium is due—not because somebody on the internet declared that every aquarium needs exactly the same percentage on exactly the same day.

Start with regular partial water changes. Test before them. Watch the trend. Adjust when stocking, feeding, plants, or water chemistry change.

The best water-change schedule is the one that keeps your aquarium consistently stable before the fish have to tell you something is wrong.
